The R36 is the spiritual successor to the W8.

Back in 2005, Volkswagen unveilled a brand new generation of Passat to replace the ageing 3B/3BG Passat. This also meant the death of the anomaly that was the W8. The new Passat “type 3C” (or B6) did come with a 3.6l VR6 engine as soon as it was launched developping either 250PS or 280PS. The 280 PS version was, I think, the direct replacement for the W8. Same power, approx the same amount of torque, and a 4Motion system. But, for me the real successor to the W8 is the R36, because just like the W8 in its time, the R36 made no sense in the Passat range. The R36, coming in either sedan or Variant (as pictured), had the same VR6 the Passat already came with. But this time it developped 300PS, though the torque output didn’t change, at 266 lb-ft. 0 to 62mph was done in 5.6 seconds for the sedan, shaving almost a second from the Passat W8 time. It also came with an R36 only bodykit as well as other bits and bobs like a lower ride height or special seats. I love this car, because at the time it made absolutely no sense in the VW line-up. And in 2010 it was discontinued when they introduced the B7 Passat, a facelift of the B6. Goodbye R36, though the VR6 stayed to top the engine range, still with 300hp and a bit less torque. And the VR6 is definitely gone from the Passat range with the brand new B8 Passat.

Nothing is a W8 successor BUT another W8.

The R36 Passat is awesome.

I think the new one is named a VR6:

“n Canada and the United States, the Passat NMS was initially released with a 2.5L 5-Cylinder engine, 2.0 TDI engine and 3.6L VR6 engine.” -Wikipedia.

Was extremely close to looking at this generation of Passats when car shopping but didn’t know if they would have the long term reliability issues it seems like most VWs have.
